Setting Up Passkeys

Setting Up Passkeys

Passkeys offer a faster, more secure way to sign in to Boardwise without remembering passwords.

What Are Passkeys?

Passkeys are a modern authentication technology (built on WebAuthn/FIDO2 standards) that replaces passwords with cryptographic keys stored securely on your device. Instead of typing a password, you authenticate using your fingerprint, face, or device PIN.

Why Use Passkeys?

  • Phishing resistant: Passkeys only work on the legitimate Boardwise site and cannot be tricked by fake login pages
  • Nothing to remember: No passwords to forget or reset
  • Faster sign-in: Authenticate in seconds with a quick biometric scan
  • More secure: Cryptographic keys never leave your device and cannot be stolen in a data breach

Supported Devices and Browsers

Passkeys work with most modern devices and browsers:

Platform Authenticators (Built Into Your Device)

  • Apple devices: Touch ID and Face ID on Mac, iPhone, and iPad
  • Windows: Windows Hello using fingerprint, face, or PIN
  • Android: Fingerprint or face unlock on Android devices

Browsers

Passkeys are supported in recent versions of:

  • Chrome
  • Safari
  • Firefox
  • Edge

Hardware Security Keys

Boardwise also supports external security keys for users who prefer physical authentication devices. See the Hardware Security Keys section below for details.

Registering a New Passkey

To add a passkey to your account:

  1. Sign in to Boardwise on the device you want to use (for example, your iPad)
  2. Open the menu under your initials, choose Edit Profile, then the Security tab
  3. Tap or click Add a passkey. The page tells you which device you are on, for example "You're on Windows PC (Edge)"
  4. Your device will ask for your fingerprint, your face, or its PIN. Follow its prompts. To stop, choose Cancel: nothing is added and you can still sign in with an email code
  5. The passkey appears under Your passkeys, named after your device, with the date you added it

Boardwise names each passkey after the device and browser you added it on (for example, "Windows PC (Edge)" or "iPhone (Safari)"). To change a name, choose Rename on that passkey. Once you have signed in with a passkey, its row also shows when it was last used.

To remove a passkey, choose Remove on its row and confirm. You can still sign in with an email code, and you can add a new passkey at any time.

Add a passkey on each device you use

A passkey stays with the device it was made on. Apple devices signed in to the same Apple account share their passkeys, and so do Android devices signed in to the same Google account, but a passkey made on an iPhone does not work on a Windows laptop, and one made on a Windows laptop does not work on an iPhone.

If you use more than one kind of device, for example a Windows laptop and an iPhone, sign in on each one, open the Security tab there, and add a passkey. Each one is named after its device, so you can tell them apart in the list.

When every passkey you have can only be used on the device it was made on, the Security tab on your computer shows a Next step suggesting you add one on your phone or tablet. It only appears when it is certainly true, and you can put it away with the link at the bottom of the card.

When you add a passkey while signing a resolution or accepting an invitation, Boardwise names it for you after your device (for example, "Mac Touch ID" or "Windows Hello").

Tip: After signing in with a magic link, Boardwise may suggest setting up a passkey. This is a good opportunity to add one for faster future logins.

Signing In With a Passkey

Once you have registered a passkey, signing in is simple:

  1. Go to the Boardwise sign-in page
  2. Click Sign in with Passkey
  3. Your device will prompt you to authenticate using your fingerprint, face, or PIN
  4. You are signed in immediately after successful authentication

Autofill Integration

On supported browsers, Boardwise offers autofill-style passkey authentication. When you focus on the email field, your browser may offer to sign you in with a saved passkey automatically.

Managing Multiple Passkeys

You can register passkeys on multiple devices. This is useful if you:

  • Use both a laptop and a phone
  • Want a backup in case one device is lost
  • Share access across work and personal devices

Viewing Your Passkeys

To see all registered passkeys:

  1. Open Edit Profile, then the Security tab
  2. Under Your passkeys, you will see every passkey on your account
  3. Each passkey shows the name it was given and when it was added

The list cannot tell which device you are using at the moment, which is why the name you give each passkey matters. If you see "You haven't added a passkey yet", there are no passkeys on your account at all.

Best Practices

  • Register a passkey on each device you regularly use to sign in
  • Consider adding a hardware security key as a backup
  • Remove passkeys from devices you no longer use

Removing a Passkey

If you lose a device, replace it, or no longer need a passkey:

  1. Open Edit Profile, then the Security tab
  2. Find the passkey you want to remove under Your passkeys
  3. Tap or click the trash icon next to it
  4. Confirm that you want to remove it. The passkey is removed straight away

Note: Removing a passkey from Boardwise does not delete it from your device. You may also want to remove the credential from your device's settings (such as iCloud Keychain or Windows Hello settings).

Troubleshooting Passkey Issues

Passkey Not Recognized

If Boardwise does not recognize your passkey:

  • Make sure you are using the same device where you originally set up the passkey
  • A passkey made on one kind of device does not work on another (see Add a passkey on each device you use)
  • Try signing in with your email instead, then register a new passkey on the current device

"This device already has your passkey"

You see this when you try to add a passkey on a device that already has one for your account. You do not need a second one there: use the one you have to sign in.

If that passkey is not working:

  1. On the Security tab, find the passkey you added on this device under Your passkeys. If you only have one, the message names it
  2. Tap or click the trash icon next to it and confirm
  3. Tap or click Add a passkey again to make a new one on this device

"Passkey Not Registered" Error

This means the passkey on your device is not linked to your Boardwise account. To resolve:

  1. Sign in using your email (magic link)
  2. Go to Profile > Security
  3. Register this device as a new passkey

Session Expired During Setup

If you see "Session expired" during passkey registration:

  1. Refresh the page
  2. Start the passkey registration process again
  3. Complete the registration within the two-minute window

Device Not Supported

If your device does not support passkeys:

  • Use email-based login (magic link) as an alternative
  • Consider using a hardware security key for passwordless authentication
  • Update your browser and operating system to the latest version

Passkey Works on One Site But Not Boardwise

Passkeys are site-specific for security. A passkey registered with another service will not work on Boardwise. You need to register a separate passkey specifically for Boardwise.

Browser or Device Prompts Not Appearing

If the passkey prompt does not appear:

  • Check that your browser allows biometric prompts (check browser settings)
  • Make sure your device has biometric authentication enabled
  • Try using a different browser
  • Restart your browser or device

Using Hardware Security Keys

Hardware security keys like YubiKey provide an additional option for passkey authentication. These physical devices plug into your computer or connect via NFC.

Supported Hardware Keys

Boardwise works with any FIDO2-compatible security key, including:

  • YubiKey 5 series
  • YubiKey Security Key series
  • Google Titan Security Keys
  • Feitian keys
  • Other FIDO2-certified devices

Registering a Hardware Security Key

  1. Sign in to Boardwise
  2. Open Edit Profile, then the Security tab
  3. Type a name for the key, such as "YubiKey", and click Add a passkey
  4. When prompted, insert your security key (USB) or tap it (NFC)
  5. Touch the key when its light blinks to confirm
  6. The key appears under Your passkeys with the name you gave it

Signing In With a Hardware Key

  1. Click Sign in with Passkey
  2. Insert your security key or hold it near your device for NFC
  3. Touch the key when prompted
  4. You are signed in

Benefits of Hardware Keys

  • Physical security: The key must be physically present to sign in
  • Works across devices: Use the same key on multiple computers
  • No battery required: USB keys draw power from your computer
  • Durable: Hardware keys are designed for years of daily use

Tips for Hardware Key Users

  • Keep a backup key in a secure location
  • Register the backup key with Boardwise before you need it
  • Consider registering both a hardware key and a platform passkey for flexibility
