Working with Action Items
Action items help you track tasks and follow-ups that arise from board and committee work. Use them to assign responsibilities, set deadlines, and ensure nothing falls through the cracks between meetings.

What Are Action Items?
Action items are trackable tasks that can be:
- Standalone tasks - General to-dos not tied to a specific meeting
- Meeting-linked - Tasks that arose from a particular meeting discussion
Each action item can have one or more assignees, a due date, detailed notes, and comments for ongoing discussion.
Creating Action Items
From the Action Items List
- Navigate to Action Items from the main menu
- Click New Action Item
- Enter a title describing the task
- Optionally link it to a meeting using the Meeting dropdown
- Select one or more assignees
- Set a due date
- Add any additional details in the rich text field
- Click Create Action Item
From a Committee or Board
When viewing a committee or board, you can create action items scoped to that group:
- Go to the committee or board page
- Click Action Items in the navigation
- Click New Action Item
Action items created this way are automatically scoped to that group and will only be visible to group members.
Assigning Action Items
You can assign action items to one or more people in your organization:
- When creating or editing an action item, use the Assigned dropdown
- Select all the people responsible for completing the task
- Each assignee receives a notification about their new assignment
For group-scoped action items, group members appear first in the assignee list for convenience.
Setting Due Dates
Every action item can have a due date:
- Use the Due by field to set when the task should be completed
- The due date appears on action item cards and in the detail view
- You can add action items to your calendar for deadline reminders
Tracking Status and Completion
Action items have two states: Pending and Completed.
Marking Tasks Complete
If you are assigned to an action item, you can mark your assignment complete:
- Open the action item
- Click Mark complete in the Assignments panel
- Your status changes to complete (shown with a checkmark)
An action item is considered fully complete when all assignees have marked their assignments done.
Viewing Completed Items
To see completed action items:
- Go to Action Items
- Click Completed in the navigation
This shows all action items where every assignee has finished their work.
Commenting on Action Items
Use comments to discuss progress, ask questions, or provide updates:
- Open the action item
- Scroll to the comments section at the bottom
- Type your comment and submit
All assignees and organization administrators can view and add comments.
Viewing Your Assigned Tasks
Board members and committee members can quickly see their personal action items:
From the Dashboard
Your dashboard shows pending action items assigned to you across all organizations. Click any item to view details and mark it complete.
From My Action Items
- Click your profile or the My Action Items link
- View all pending tasks assigned to you
- Switch to Completed to see finished items
Scoping Action Items to Committees or Boards
Action items can be scoped to a specific committee or board:
- Organization-level - Visible to administrators and assignees across the organization
- Group-scoped - Only visible to members of that committee or board (plus administrators)
When you create an action item from within a committee or board, it is automatically scoped to that group. The group scope also carries over when linking an action item to a meeting - it inherits the meeting's group.
Why Scope Matters
Group scoping ensures that sensitive committee work stays within that committee. For example, an action item for a compensation committee review would only be visible to compensation committee members and organization administrators.
Editing and Deleting Action Items
To modify an action item:
- Open the action item
- Click Edit to change the title, assignees, due date, or details
- Click Delete to remove the action item entirely
Depending on your role, you may need specific permissions to edit or delete action items in a committee or board.
